Possible to host same email domain within both Gmail & Office 365 at same time?
Is it possible to host users within the same email domain within Office 365 and to host a few remaining users within a Gmail corporate account?
Users within both Office 365 and Gmail will both use the same email domain name which is company.com.
A company I am working for would like this to be done since they don't want to have to pay for an Office 365 licensing fee for all users and would like only the employees to be migrated into Office 365. They would like the contractors and consultants to be left within Gmail.
If this is possible what is involved in setting up this type of coexistence?

Two different email systems cannot have the same domain name. Not possible. The Gmail users will need to stick with Gmail and the other (Company Users) will have the Office 365 mail.
Possible in theory if you were to somehow have one system redirect email to the other. Really messy and ill-advised, not a solution would touch with a barge pole.
The outside sender is only going to go to one place, so all the Office 365 mail would have to be forwarded to Gmail.
Worse than messy. Do not do it.
