Folder "System Volume Information" filling up disk space

I have a 2012 R2 Vsphere server where the disk is nearly full. I  can see that the main folders only use a few GBs, but then there's a "System Volume Information" root folder to which I, as admin, have no access to and I suspect that it's consuming all the disk space.

I tried checking the size using third party tools but I keep getting an "access denied" message.

What can I do ? Is it safe to take ownership of the folder ?

Thanks in advance.

You have to disable the shadow copies. These are usually stored in System Volume Information.
