What does an IT department do?
I have a new boss who doesn't understand what my department does.
I was hoping someone on EE has been in the same situation where they've had to put together an outline of exactly what IT does.
If anyone is willing to share what they have that would be appreciated.
If you have a chart of the IT department that would be GREAT.
Or if anyone has a link to a good site that describes IT, that would also be appreciated.

We have 2 IT staff. Director and Help Desk Technician. We manage 5 locations with 100 users
100 users should not have Director level :) I think IT Manager or System Admin is more suitable title.
Anyway, you can say:
Director: general management, take care system, network, communication with vendors, contractors, suppliers
Helpdesk: support end users, other tasks assigned by Director
Take it easy !

@John, I love your suggestion.
I obviously know all the functions of my job. I've been doing it for 17 years. I was just being lazy and hoping someone had already typed all of this out and created an organizational chart so I didn't have to.

i agree that this is a strange question coming from an IT professional
I've gotten a couple of private messages and I want to clarify my position a little. I am not anti-IT or even anti-cloud at all, nor do I see a lack of value in the profession or the resources. But the consumerization of I.T. is real and my quickbooks analogy is apt. You still need a good accountant to maneuver tax codes, and good talented business number crunchers can focus on market research, maximizing profitability, etc. But the grinding work of balancing books, generating P&L reports, and similar have been automated.
I see the same with I.T. The roles and requirements are changing. It is becoming more specialized, higher level engineering, and business solution focused. Button mashers need not apply anymore. Hope that helps.

For example in my Company - 300 users: IT department includes 10 people:
1 IT Manager: general management, know both software + system
3 Coders: develop the application which serves the business, like HR, payroll
2 System Admin: manage the system + network, troubleshooting, implement new infrastructures
4 IT Helpdesk: support end-users
