sbs backup dc (2008 r2) failover ok, but how can i get dhcp to do the same?
In a slow process of changing over servers from 2003 SBS (O.S past EOL) to a 2008 R2 box. I was able to get the 2008 server to be accepted as a backup DC, but as far as I know, SBS must be the DHCP server - is it possible to automate that on SBS going down?

hmmm... will this export from SBS / import to 2008 R2 work? I saw several comments in my research that there was a translation problem, and while no errors occur in the transfer, It didn't work when done (red x's). I cannot have much downtime here, so am treading carefully.
oh, and yes you are correct in your terminology - 2 DC's and SBS's is primary- the terminology is due to current usage - if the first goes away for any reason, the "second" picks up the slack

DHCP fail over option not available in 2003/2008 servers, but 2016 server has a new feature for this. Since you have enabled failover cluster, what you can do is, configure dhcp with same ip range as sbs, but stop the dhcp service and disable in it. In case if your sbs server goes down, you can start and authorize this dhcp.
