Dell M4800 Laptop ethernet access

If I turn off wireless access on this M4800 and hook up cat5 directly from my router to the M4800 shouldn't I have instant internet connection without the necessity of configuring anything? I am showing "No internet connection". I know the router is functioning properly. I am 5 feet from the router to the laptop. I have tried two new cat5 cables. If  I must do some configuration to make the pc recognize that there is a signal from the router on my ethernet port available, where do I turn  it on? Windows 10.

To cut to the chase, I found that "Local network adapter is disabled" was listed when diagnostics ran. I asked for it to be enabled and everything worked perfect. THANKS TO ALL  for your advice. I have copied all your excellent suggestions for future reference. There is quite a bit of education in your suggestions that I appreciate!
I will close this question now, but please know that it was difficult, with so much excellent information, to choose a Best Solution. Thanks to all  for your efforts!
You are very welcome and I was happy to help.
