There are lots of good products out there. 10 years ago Windows 10 was not around, and Defender for Windows 10 is very competent. Other products are as well
@eli khoury
I'm not sure what you are talking about. Windows Defender (aka Microsoft Security Essentials before Windows 10) certainly handles threats in real time (unless you have real time protection turned off). PCs running windows defender, who had their updates current were protected from "wanna cry" etc. well before some of the other products mentioned here -- Releasing their update, on 12 May 2017
Windows Defender (aka Microsoft Security Essentials) has become one of the most reliable anti virus tools — recently surpassing many of the perennially best antivirus programs on the market. Microsoft has invested significantly in its security department and that has resulted with world class ability to detect new threats and deploy updates. Its a key collaborator within the security community, Its very effective at spotting new threats, leveraging its base of over a billion Defender users and its extensive cloud based threat analysis capability.
Bottom line, if you keep windows up to date, that automatically keeps Defender up to date. Folks that don't update will get burned no matter what product they choose.

hello,
If you have safe habit , just need a decent scanner with no special extras, Windows defender works just fine.
if you are not in the case above, you can use any more advanced 3rd party security softwares you like.
I will suggest Emsisoft Anti-Malware, indeed it has several strong components to keep your computer safe:
- A dual-engine real time scanner
- A Behavior Blocker with anti-ransomware capabilities and a Windows Firewall fortification feature.
- A Web Filter to prevent access to malicious sites.
- A very reactive and professional customers support team
- An emphasize toward privacy.
Just remember than most AVs offers a trial version, so just test any of them, and select the one you feel easier to use and fits your needs.

The most important thing is to enable only one Antivirus in real time mode and as suggested above you can have two Antivirus or more on your system but only use one of them in real-time mode and use the other for weekly scan.
