Outlook 2010 change pw

Client has    Outlook 2010...when opening Outlook it asks for a password...
We enter the password and it works...Email sends and recieves...

Client wants to remove the password...

I copied the PST file...it's over 5 gb in size...

When I go to Data Properties (from within Outlook)...Advanced...
Here I can change the pw...or remove it...

HOWEVER...when I enter the PW...it does not accept it...
Error message....Password you typed is incorrect...retype the password...

It's a simple password...we have entered it multiple times...we know it's the
correct password...but at this point it won;t accept the pw...
BUT...when we open Outlook and it asks for the pw...then it works...

How can I fix this so we can remove the password...

Many thanks in advance...

Make a copy of the PST file, go to Control Panel, Mail. Delete the Outlook Profile (deletes the email Account).

Start Outlook, make a new email account and point it to the PST file. This will renew the password.
This is because when launching Outlook, you are being prompted for the MAILBOX password but there may be a DIFFERENT password on the PST so be careful deleting the mail profile or you may lose access to the PST. Is this an Exchange mailbox or is Outlook connecting to another cloud-based mailbox?
That is why I always suggest backing up the PST

# check if you windows password is expired.
# change the windows password, re-enter the new credentials for the outlook.
# If the PST is password protected then and if you have forgot it you may use third part software to recover it.
# Before any further test on pst , please backup pst.
If you delete the profile that has access to the password-protected PST, you might not be able to open it in a new profile unless the PST's password is known which, apparently, it isn't. You can make a NEW profile without deleting the existing one and test though.

Before you delete any profiles, try this method of removing the password: https://www.slipstick.com/problems/pst-repair/remove-a-password-from-a-pst-file/

Well...partial success...
Here is where I'm at...

1.  I have a FULL image backup of the HD...
2.  I deleted the Outlook profile in Control Panel > Mail...
3.  Opened Outlook and set up the email account again...
4.  This created a NEW pst file...
5.  LOT's of email came in...
6.  Send / recieve test is good...

7.  It will NOT let me swap to the original PST file...
7a.  I normally setup my Outlook PST files in My Documents/Outlook...
Then I get the PST file in my normal backups of the My Docs folder...
7b.  I COPIED the original PST file which for some reason is located in App Data...the default location...
       To the My Documents/Outlook folder...
8.  In Outlook...File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data Files Tab....ONLY the newly created pst file shows up...
So I cannot swap back to the original PST file...
9.  In Outlook...I tried to open the  original PST file from the App Data (default) location and it will NOT open...

My thinking is if I have to I can copy the stuff out of the original PST over to the new PST...5.5 Gb of data but this would be a solution...
BUT...neither the original PST from either the default location or the copied to...(My Docs/Outlook) works...

As a side note...I did a quick test on the HD and it is showing some faults...I'm going to replace it...and put back on my image that I created
before I started working on this...

OK...to answer a few questions...
1.  The Outlook pw works as I tested it on his webmail...
2.  I did NOT origionaly set Outlook up on this machine...
BUT looking back on my notes...we have had several corrupted profiles over the past 3-4 years...
AND about 3 years ago I see where I had an issue with Outlook and that's when I moved his PST file from the default location
to My Docs/Outlook as I was setting up a backup system for this client...

Gilnov...there is something else wrong here....I NEVER set up a password on the PST...and I know that the client does NOT have the
knowledge to do it himself...Whevner I set up Outlook for a client...I do it the simplest possible way...he POPS from the local cable
company...

Ajay Chanana...This is a standalone PC...no Exchange...there is NO logon windows password...

I'm going to head out and get a new hard drive...and while I'm gone I'mm gonna do some heavy virus checking...

This PST password is something that started about 2 weeks or so ago...he got tired of putting in the password...therefore I have the
"pleasure" of solving it...:)

Appreciate any suggestions....
I will be working on this pretty much of the day...
You could export the original PST to a new PST and make sure it does not have any password. That eliminates that.

Then start fresh with another new Outlook Profile and make sure that will work. It should (95%) unless something is wrong with your OS.

Then import the mail from the newly created export. Then all will work including the password.
Sounds like you may have a corrupt PST. PST's are very prone to decay and corruption because the files are so big. Law of averages: bigger file, bigger target. It doesn't usually help but it's worth a shot to run scanpst on the broken PST. Another thought: since it's a POP account, everything - or a lot of it anyway - might still be on the server. Have you looked to see what is missing in the new profile/PST? It may be enough of it was downloaded. If the client is satisfied, call it solved.
Sounds like you may have a corrupt PST  That is certainly possible. Ensuring a backup, do a repair with SCANPST. It may take several hours and may fail even so. You may need Stellar Tools (not free) to fix the file.
Gilnov...I like the idea..."if client is satisfied, cal it solved..."

Corrupt PST is certainly an option...although I really had not considered it until now...
I thought this was going to be easy...and since the PST is 5.5 Gb...and I have Stellar...

I got a new HD...going to put the image on it and basically starting over...
When that;'s done I'll do the PST scan...and see what that does...

Experienced...(love the name)...
I can export the file...but how does that eliminate the password...???

Maybe...maybe...after I get imaged back to the original condition...running a PST might fix the pw problem
assuming...it's not really a pw problem but maybe the PST file gone "bonkers" considering it's size....thinking this because the client would not...could not... put a pw on the PST file himself...

Thanks guys...Report back in a few hours...
I can export the file...but how does that eliminate the password...???

You export to a brand new PST file and it is the emails being exported, so it will not bring along the password with it.
Experienced....
So...I export the emails, calendar, sent etc.... ONLY and NOT entire the pst file...
Correct...???
Yes export the email (folders) , contact folder, calendar folder, and that should do it. Always keep the original file as backup
OK...got problems...
1.  Installed new HD...
2.  Restored original image...Outlook is now opening the original PST file...requesting the password...
3.  Ran SCANPST...it found "minor inconsistencies"...did the repair...
4.  Open Outlook...asks for the pw...I enter it and Outlook   opens...
5.  When I try to export any of the folders...Mail...Sent...etc it will NOT export...
I get error message..."The operation failed.  The messaging interfaces have returned an an unknown error."...

NOW>>>I COPIED THE PST FILE TO A USB HD AND ON MY COMPUTER....I ALSO USE OUTLOOK 2010...I AM ABLE TO OPEN THE
ORIGINAL PST FILE WITH NO PROBLEMS...PERFECT...SO THE ISSUE IS EITHER IN OFFICE 2010 OR IN WIN 7...

I have the original file in 2 locations...and on the image...so I;m safe there...

Right now I think I'm looking at a total rebuild and this is NOT good...
My client is a retired engineer....well, partially retired...he designs valves for controlling water flow for hydro electric dams...
I am NOT certain he has all the software CD or downloads he needs to get a rebuild back and fully running...

Thoughts and ideas appreciated...

Ok...
Talked it over with the client...I really don;t want to put any more time in this bugger...
Even with a W7 repair install...if it does NOT fix the problems...then I've more time and still
going to get a new pc...

So...headed for the comptuer store...

Many thanks all...

Will give points later...
It probably won't require a full rebuild of the machine unless you are having other problems. If you have the install media for Office, you probably just need to do a "clean install" of Office. By "clean install", I mean strip out all files, folders and registry items that comprise Office then do a fresh install. If you don't have the 2010 media, a new copy of 2016 is only a couple hundred bucks. Either way, you'll want to clean out the debris from the current version of Office.

This little gem from Microsoft will make a clean install a lot easier: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/odsupport/2011/04/08/how-to-obtain-and-use-offscrub-to-automate-the-uninstallation-of-office-products/

Gilnov...
I really don;t like Office 2016...mostly due to the low contrast...there are NO "black" lines anywhere...it's all this "off gray" stuff that seems
so popular now...and I don;t think my client would like it either since older folks have more vision issues...

BUT...your link to this Office cleanup program looks good...After I'm all done with this...I will have the old PC and
I'm gonna try the cleanup prog and see if it fixes what ailes this version of Office...

Tnanks
Experienced...Gilgov...splitting points between you guys...(gals)...whatever....
You stuck with me and provided helpful ideas and suggestions...

Just now wrapping up...set up new Win 10 PC...installed all his needed aps...just now got Outlook working correctly...
Everything looks good...

Many thanks both of you...
Well...had to choose a "best" button to close....both you guys were so good I really don;'t think there
was a "best" button....but....whatever...
Thanks for the update and I am happy with your closure
Excellent work. Thanks for the points.
