Comcast IP addresses
I have Comcast as an internet provider. The public IP address is different on the desktop vs the laptop. Why is that? I thought the public addresses would be the same coming from the same network.

I'm sorry I was not clear.
The public IP for the desktop was 162.17.50.134
The public IP for the laptop was a different number.
Behind the router the addresses are 10.1.10.230 and 10.1.10.189
I need for those public IPs to be the same.

I'm still unclear. Let me see if I have this right. This is just for example.
Computer1:
- Private IP 10.1.10.230
- Public IP 162.17.50.134
Computer2:
- Private IP 10.1.10.189
- Public IP 162.17.1.27 (I just made something up)
If this is the case then I would guess Comcast is using carrier grade NAT. Check the Comcast router to see if it has a private address or an address in the 100.64.0.0/10.

You have it correct.
I guess my next call is to Comcast.
Thanks

If your laptop is using WiFi, make sure you are on your own network and not your neighbors. I have clients that accidentally use their neighbors WiFi all the time. That will show a different public IP.
The comcast cable modem has a public xfinity wifi and a private wifi on the network shared with the ethernet ports on their modem. Make sure your laptop is connecting to the private wifi (you need to use the ssid and password they assigned to you). Do not use the xfinity???? ssid. To make things simpler, have comcast create the private network with an ssid you give them (that you can easily recognize). They can do that while they are on the phone with you. Or, you can do that yourself in some locations from your xfinity online account.
Glad to help. :)

Very helpful, thanks!
Can you google What's My IP and see if it matches your computer's IP? It probably won't.

If your computer and laptop are in any of the below ranges then you have a private IP address and the router is performing NAT.
10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
