Windows 2003 DC demotion

I have inherited an old Windows 2003 server that still believes it is a DC. There is an application running on this Server that I want to preserve. Active Directory has been corrupted so the normal demotion commands wont work. How can I force this demotion, can I edit the registry?

I can't recall from Windows Server 2003, but can you just uninstall AD (say)?

No, this server is totally corrupted
Okay, so what is it doing that is actually causing a problem?

What are the specific symptoms?

Alan.

Have you tried dcpromo /forceremoval?
I want to disjoin it from a non existent domain is there a procedure
It believes that it belongs to a domain that does not exist, and yes I have tried dcpromo /forceremoval
Okay, but, if I may be blunt, so what?  What is the actual problem that you are encountering?

Alan.
Does the server think it's a domain controller or just a member server?

If just a member server, logon with the local administrator account, open the system properties, change from a domain to a workgroup and reboot.
Also when I try to change the domain to workgroup the selection is grayed out
This serve is no longer a domain controller, however there is no longer a DC present to allow it to remove itself from the domain that it used to belong to. I want to join this server to a different domain, if possible
Just checking - you are logging on to the machine as an administrator?
yes

Hi,

Are you sure that the machine is not a DC?

What makes you say this?

Alan.

Edit:  Sorry, my post crossed with Jeremy's - check as he asked to resolve this question.
Well guys, I am embarrassed the dcpromo /forceremoval worked. I had been up to my neck in alligators at the time it did not have the patience to realize that what i thought was the same prompt was the dcpromo systematically removing the fsmo roles, sequentially. In any event it worked and I am OK now, thanks
Glad to help. :)
Make sure you do metadata cleanup to make sure all is clean
Glad its sorted :-)
Thanks Guys
