Can you Import meta-data from WSUS 2016 into WSUS 2012/R2

We want to move to a Server 2016 environment, but we have too many disparate (and disconnected) networks to do it all at once. Our WSUS infrastructure relies on WSUS meta-data being pushed up to these networks daily (along with all the install files). We are thinking of starting the OS migration with our Internet facing network. Has anyone seen issues with importing meta-data from a WSUS 2016 server into a "lower" OS version like 2012 R2 or 2012, or can it even be done?

We run an export on our Internet WSUS, package it up and send it "downstream" via a one-way transfer system, un-package the export and then ingest it back into our other WSUS servers. The install packages are handled the same way as soon as they are downloaded by the Internet WSUS.

2016 would be the Internet side, and the other downstream systems would be 2012 and 2012 R2. Just want to make sure that won't be an issue since MS seems to be hit or miss on backwards compatibility in services with dramatic changes between OS systems.
Thanks. We'll run a test to be sure, but wanted to ask!
Thanks, sorry I didn't get back.  I don't believe the data structure has changed as I believe it is still "version 3" or whatever the last version was that was released as a non-role based software.
