Impossible to answer.  Too broad.

There will be as many answers as people in here!

For Servers, Server 2016 R2 Standard (not Essentials) for most uses. Xeon CPU's (2), ample memory (16 GB and more if Virtual Machines), lots of SSD commercial disk drives in a RAID 10 environment (several terabytes as there is never enough disk).

Look for a very strong box and host ESX or Hyper-V on it and use Virtual Machines for servers.

You would need to do some planning on the above that would relate your requirements to a plan.

Workstations are easier. For a workstation, quad core, 16 GB of memory (8 GB minimum), 1 TB of disk to allow future growth. I like Intel Video because it takes Windows 10 upgrades easier. I use Intel CPU's only, disk should be SSD.  Looking to the future, CPU should be i7 or newer (whatever is new at the time you buy)

Laptop: My ThinkPad X1 is excellent. i7 Intel CPU, 16 GB of memory, 1 TB NVM-e SSD for speed, camera, AC Wi-Fi, Intel Graphics. Some thing like this in a laptop will do very well.

Be careful about exact spec's today as things are advancing and changing quarterly. Today's exact specs will be obsolete in months.

Invest wisely in quality as consumer gear does not stand up.

Thank you  very much!!!

We have a series of info trying to decide.  Based on your comment, what we are working  toward is most uses; standard stuff as an accounting systema and just sharded storage rot the users connected.

For server we are looking into SuperServer 2049U-TR4  (adding 16gb ram, 3TB drives with Radi but no decision yet)

For workstation, Precision Tower 5000 Series

What  do you think?

Also we have info on racks or box servers - makes racks - what do you think?

Supermicro is OK. Make sure it has 3 - 4 year onsite warranty. We use Lenovo for this. We now use ONLY rack-mount servers in a proper rack - all clients.

This tower http://www.dell.com/en-ca/work/shop/dell-desktops-workstations/dell-precision-tower-5810-workstation/spd/precision-t5810-workstation/cup5810onca    looks pretty good. It is Intel CPU, non-Intel Graphics. Make sure the NVidia card says it will work into the future
