3G Modems

The network provider in my area recently shut down their 2G service and now my GSM modem doesn't work. Is there another kind of modem that would be compatible with a 3G network? I've looked a bunch of other places and it doesn't really seem to be terribly clear about it.

There are lots available.. you might even want to check with your provider

Check with your carrier... there should be. They wouldn't shut down 2G service without sufficient availability of devices that support 3G or better.
Check your with your provider as suggested above. I have a 4G modem from my ISP here. I have not seen a 2G modem in a very long time, so I am sure if you ask, they will tell you what makes and models of modems they support . I have a HUAWEI USB modem here and it works up to 4G.
Checking with your provider based on where it is being used, but you should consider skipping 3G and go to 4G as many providers are in the process of turning down their 3G network support in favor of the 4G.
Potentially, the device you are using was part of your provider's contract, in which case it might be possible to have the provider replace this one for the new one that will work better and with 4G LTE...

Is there a modem that is 3G/4G that can be controlled using AT commands?
No as they are ethernet modems
you need to clarify what you mean. Some devices accept at commands to code them, they use special ports to connect, but usually not when they are pcimcia/usb type of devices.
airlink from sierra wireless might have some that have those options..... but you have to check first.

No such thing so far as I know.

What is your need for AT commands in a modern world?

Yes, not in the form factor that I assume you want. I have used a device similar to this one

What do you want to use the modem for? Internet or managing device?
