VMware Conversion

A file server will be converted to a virtual server hosted by VMware.

1. Should I convert data partition (which has 4TB) or data , or
2. Atach a NAS on the orignal server and copy the folders into the NAS. Convert C partition to a virtual server. Afterwards, create a virtual data partition and copy all folders to the virtual server

Which way is faster ?

Thx

You may conver the whole server. You can also convert only system partition and then attach additional disk to converted VM and copy all data to it using for example robocopy to maintain all security. It depends on you. If you for example have lots on shares on data disk and do not want to recreate those after conversion then you may try to convert server with all disks.
So conversion of only system disk would require more manual work afterwards.
