Unplug the PC and leave it for 5 minutes. Plug it back it and attempt to power up.

If it will not power up, replace the power supply. I assume it was all working before.

Do you know the make and model of the power supply?

This is not necessarily a power supply issue - it could be a motherboard/cabling issue.  Does the motherboard have any LEDs on it?  Are any of them lit?

This is an old PC Id like to resurrect ......

I have another old PSU from another old PC so I swapped it into the ? PC as a test.
Looked good initially and PC powered up..happy days...  then PC powered down, 2 mins later bang! and a smell of smoke.

So do I have a really faulty mother board or a dodgey "newish tester" PSU

Im wondering if its worth testing another PSU incase the PC eats that as well...

Autopsy > Attached pics of original PSU - with orange label .. and the one that blew up User generated imageUser generated image
