Update VMware 5.5
My Dell VMware 5.5 servers were installed two year ago. Do I need to download any patches and update the Vmware ? Should those patches be downloaded from Dell or Vmware website ? Can I simply install the latest patch or I need to install every patch one by one ? Any steps on updating the server ?

Thx. If everything works fine on the VMware, is it necessary or common practise to patch the Vmware ?
I would prefer to have patches installed as those fix security and other problems. It is the best practice similar to patching Windows systems.

Do I need to shutdown the server before rebooting the VMware host ?

All VMs needs to be shut down before you can install updates or reboot the VMware host. So you need to plan some downtime for your VMs.

Just boot your server from this image and choose to update ESXi and preserve your datastores. Remeber to have a good backup of your virtual machines just in case something goes wrong during update.
The other option is to download the latest build 5230635 of your ESXi from VMware site, upload it to local datastore of your ESXi host, move host to maintenance mode and update is using esxcli command like: esxcli software vib install -d "/vmfs/volumes/Datastore/D
