EMC Clariion CX3-80 - Hotspare Drive
Hi there,
Can you please let us know how to configure a hot spare for the OS RAID? We have 5 drives as part of the OS RAID and there is a hot spare, but we don't know how to configure it so that it can be used as a hot spare. We're using Navisphere and it doesn't mention anything about a hot spare. All of the drives are 146GB.
Thanks,
- Christian

Attached is a view from Navisphere of the drives I am talking about. What are these drives, do they have the EMC OS? I don't know.
There is no mention of a hot spare so that's why we're curious if there is an option to set Disk 5 as the hot spare? As well, how can we tell which drives are part of the RAID?

The first five drives should have a YELLOW tape across them indicating these are the SAN OS drives and should not be used for any other purpose, it looks like disk 2 is empty (BUS 0 disk 1).
The five disks are setup in a way to maintain redundancy and maintain the SAns operability, there is no need for a HOT spare for the first 5....

Yup, we see the yellow tape across the first 5 drives. There is a 6th drive next to it, shouldn't that be the hot spare?
Where can we see how it is set up (RAID level, etc)?

You can not, the first five in your case the drive tray in bay 1 empty.
You need drives in the position 5-15 that you can create LUNs that would be assigned/allocated to hosts. Each LUN you create can be of different raid depending on your needs.
No, usually a hot spare is set for the entire unit/shelf versus for individual LUNs.

Oh ok. I did just replace the bad drive in slot 1 so now it all seems to be working well. Do you know if the first 5 drives are set in RAID 5 or 10 or another?

How many total drives does this setup have? Do you have LUNs defined?
The hot-spare when set will be use in the unit in the event of a drive failure. Are you trying to dedicate the hot-spare solely for the flare five drives?
