Outlook.com contact entries are not syncronising

I have set my Android phone to sync with myemail@outlook.com and my desktop Outlook 365 to sync to the same account and even though both seem to show they are syncing, the contact lists are different. Can anyone help me fix.

To expand a little, in case it is relevant,
1. I have two yahoo IMAP accounts in my sync list, one of which is the default
2. I have 3 other Microsoft Exchange email addresses on different accounts that I am syncing too, PLUS myemail@Outlook.com
3. I am not trying to sync Outlook.com emails, just the contacts because that it's the only one I thought Outlook would sync with
4. The other 3 Exchange accounts seem to be syncing fine

Hi,

To sync an Android phone directly with Outlook requires the use of a third party utility. Outlook has no part in the sync process, it only supplies the data you want to sync. Sync software does all of the work.

One of the supported App is 'MyPhoneExplorer' which you can download from Android app store.

That's strange. The other 3 Exchange accounts are synchronizing with my phone just fine. The only Exchange account that isn't is the Outlook.com account which I understood would sync too.
Hi,

The outlook.com account you mentioned is an office365 account?

No, its just an outlook.com email address. The other 3 are MS Exchange hosted email addresses. I do have an Office 365 subscription but it doesn't come with email.

I think this link is one of the ones I looked up that suggested it should work:

Please be reminded that using third party tool like the one mentioned above will have risk of identity theft of your Outlook.com account and if your account is compromised, it is unlikely that you can get it back as Microsoft will just ask you to go through filling many online forms without actually helping you to recover the account.

Hi Jackie, what third party tool is that going through? I thought all it said was I needed to create an Outlook.com (or hotmail.com) email address which are hosted on the MS web site exchange servers and so synchronise like the other exchange accounts I have hosted by MS. Desktop Outlook will only sync contacts and calendars with Exchange accounts not IMAP/POP3. Have I totally misunderstood this?
"One of the supported App is 'MyPhoneExplorer' which you can download from Android app store."

If I were you, I will stay away from third party tool.
Have you tried to use Outlook for Android app?

Hi Jackie, thanks for the suggestions. Do those apps enable me to sync contacts on Outlook desktop with my Android? Syncing works with my Exchange accounts, but those are work accounts. Most of my contacts are personal and not being able to sync between devices is a pain.

I still don't understand what 3rd party product is used with the Outlook, hotmail or live accounts that are supposed to sync according to the link above.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/opeople-ocontacts/outlookcom-contacts-only-sync-one-way-on-android/cd62a2a9-b02e-420f-8301-e6c08c5f2207?auth=1

It is a known issue that there is only one way sync for contacts and calendar of Outlook.com account (i.e. from server to mobile device only).

There is no fix if you are using the free Outlook.com account.
Free Outlook.com account is working like Office 365 Exchange online account, but it is free.

Of course, there is no free lunch in our world, you need to use Outlook for Android app which is not perfect when you compare the same app on iOS.

If you must solve the problem, you need to pay for an Office 365 subscription and you can use OWA for Android app instead. Free Outlook.com is not entitled to use OWA for Android app while O365 paid account can use both and you can submit a support ticket to Microsoft if you have any problem.

The link is outdated and did not say a word on Android OS at all.

Besides, do not rely on information source from third party.

Ok, just confirming then. I have an Office 365 Office subscription, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access etc - 5 user home version. With that I have use of Outlook 2016 on my desktop and I can have Outlook on my Android. But because Outlook 365 doesn't come with an email address I can't sync my Android with my desktop Outlook, but I can sync OWA with my Android. Do I have it right?
You need Office 365 Business Essentials which costs US$5 per user per month which includes Exchange Online service.

I feel like I'm snookered.

I work for three organizations who have each have a MS Business Account and have given me an email address so I need a desktop and phone app to work with those. However most of my contacts are in my personal account that I also need to access via my PC and phone and I want to be able to sync. I looked at Thunderbird as an option, but it's not friends with Exchange accounts. And MS Outlook won't handle it unless I decide to pay them another $5 per month for a Business Essentials email address.  Maybe I should be looking at other email clients to see if any of them will do the job, perhaps as a one off cost without the bells and whistles (Yammer, etc) I already have through the business accounts.
Have you tried to install Outlook for Android app?

There is a Setting within the above app to Sync contacts on your Outlook.com account.
If Outlook.com is critical importance to you and you only want to add Outlook.com directly to the OS, your only choice is to use iPhone, not an Android phone.

Hi Jackie, there are two things I would like to achieve.
One is that I would prefer to use MS Outlook desktop because it fits better with the 3 organisations I work with
Second I would like to only have one PC email browser and one phone browser
Third I would like to have my contacts sync. I have already converted my calendar to Google so it works beautifully.

The reason I created and used an Outlook.com account was because I thought it would sync but it doesn't so I will now be dumping it.

My Android will sync with any number of accounts so it's not the problem.

The problem is with the only component in this whole picture that I pay for, MS Outlook desktop. It's the only one that won't sync with anything but a paid email account. And so MS is forcing me to either pay them $5 per month for an exchange account, just so I can sync contacts on Outlook desktop.
