Need to determine dates of email within a PST files...

EE,

I have been requested by the CEO to take a collection of Outlook PST files (v2007) and determine the range of dates of the emails.
> We have a collection of about 8 PST files from various phases of this employees history.
> I need to determine the date ranges of the emails and combine these PST files into one or maybe two PST files for archiving.

I have found tools that will report statistics of the PST folders (Size, attachments, etc), but I have not found one that will report email receive dates.

Second question;
I am thinking that I could import these PST files into one outlook account and use the 'No Duplicate email' options to reduce the number of copies that could occur - Does this sound like something that will work?

Inquiring minds need to know...

Hello Alan,

Thank you for your suggestion - I had started to do something along those lines, but didn't know about the "using an unknown title" trick, I will try that later today.

Currently, I am looking for a tool, which I have found some, but they are fee-based... not too badly priced, just want to get the best one for my $$.
> For the CEO, duplicates will be an issue, so that will have to be dealt with.

I am looking at the following tools, so if you or anyone in EE has had experience with either of these, that would be a great help:
1. PST Merge Tool, by Systools
2. PST Merge Software, by Sys Info Tools

I am completely open to another other suggestions.

Again, Thank You

Hi Rojosho,

I would never install third party or additional software if I could do a job with the tools already available.

Every single thing installed is another thing to go wrong, have to be maintained, and that can cause conflicts with other software.

Most of my servers have zero extra software installed, with the (common) exception tending to be company accounting or ERP systems, which I prefer to have on a separate server if I can.

I'd especially try to avoid installing any other software on an Exchange Server.

Hope that helps,

Alan.

Hello Alan,

Thank you again and ALL very good advice.  Our environment is not one that I have access to the Exchange Server, that is on our ISPs site.  Your other advice is well taken.
> I ended up purchasing PST Merge Software, by Sys Info Tools mainly because it will remove any duplicate files and I have a collection of over 50 PST files that we have collected over the past 3 years with this user and I need to combine them.
> As such, I created a separate an entire workstation dedicated to this task/project, so that our main business server is held away from any of this activity.

Again, THANK YOU for your advice and experience.
> I will close this question and assign points.. well done

Alan has a good amount of IT/server experience which his suggestions will help in future.
You're most welcome - good luck with the project.  It might take some time, but at least you have a dedicated workstation so you can leave it running and check in every so often.

Alan.
