'Open In' feature on IOS

I have a user that has recently been unable to use the 'Open in' feature on their IOS (Iphone 6) device.
When opening a PDF from an email, they have the option normally of being able to select the icon in the top right of the screen to show apps that the attachment can open with.
I have selected the more.... option and not found any apps in there.

Is there a fix that anyone has found, or a setting on the iphone i may have missed that has been accidentally turned on\off?

Additional information:

  • Currently using the GOOD for Enterprise app for Corporate email delivery
  • The feature has previously been available
  • The Iphone is fully updated with all IOS updates.

Please let me know if there's any additional information that may assist with this. The person is an executive and i am desperately trying to find an answer, having already spent days poring over forums and not finding a solution.

Many thanks.

Hi David,

Please try tapping and holding on the PDF document for 3 seconds. The iphone will give you a quick view option, as well as other choices to open the PDF in (import with iBooks, Markup and Reply, and other apps that can open PDFs).

Side note: GFE has had issues with updating the app and the "Good Dynamics device indentifier". Essentially when you update your iOS, GFE will open but your "device identifier" will appear to be a new device. Here is a snapshot from a GFE Sr. Developer Support Engineer on the subject (albeit a few years back):

iOS has the ability to markup the PDF but if you want more options than what iOS 10 can an offer, I would recommend Adobe Acrobat or PDF Expert by Readdle. Since iOS 11 comes out today and most likely your users are going to what to have it, and knowing that GFE is a little slow on the uptake, I would have a third party solution like Adobe Acrobat or PDF Expert handy.

Let me know how things go and take care.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the response. I have updated my GFE and am still able to use Quick edit for GFE to open password protected PDFs, as is currently not supported in standard GFE client.
It may be that this user has updated their GFE client on the iphone and it is no longer compatible with Quick edit, however i have done the same on my iphone and all still works!

I am a little baffled by it all...
Hi David,

Let's try a few things:

1) Since GFE supports both portrait and landscape mode, have the user try turning the iPhone sideways then back to an upright postion. It may be that the GFE app is skipping a beat (I've seen other apps do this quite often).

2) Have the user try a soft reset (hold the Power and Home buttons until he/she sees the Apple logo). After the soft reset, try opening the PDF again. (This may fix the problem, since background refresh issues appear to plague GFE.)

3) Double check user settings in your GFE Admin browser tool. The Net/Sys Admin might have applied restrictions (GFE settings can get granular) if they saw updates come from BlackBerry that may affect users in a negative way.

4) Test tapping and holding the PDF for 3 seconds to see if it gives the option to open the PDF in GFE. If it does, select GFE and see if it opens the Quick Edit options. If not, you may want to give this Executive a third party option so that they don't get irrated with you.

5) Try saving the PDF to iCloud Drive, then tap on the PDF and hold for 3 seconds to see if it gives you the option to open the PDF with GFE. If so, see if the Quick Edit option shows (it may since the app will see this action as an import).

Lastly, we're only a half hour away from Apple releasing iOS 11, so you should know that it may not be a good idea to let the user update (if they want to) without giving them a 3rd party app option to open & edit their PDFs.

Why?

Well, if the update doesn't fix the Quick Edit issue, it may cause you even more headaches because while iOS 11 and GFE are compatible, it has known Contact syncing issues with native apps (which you know will be more of a fiasco than PDF editing problems), and it (GFE) crashes more often.

Hi Justin,

SO the update is........

I went and deleted the Quickedit app on the iphone (this is used in conjuction with GFE to enable the user to securely open password protected PDF documents).
Once i had reinstalled the app, i then tried to open a pdf using the 'open in' feature and again the app did not appear on the list of available apps.
Strangely enough after reinstalling the app, i was able to open a word document using the native viewer in GFE and then when i selected the 'open in' feature the Quickedit app was available! Only when i tried a PDF did it not appear as an app to use.

This leads me to believe that it may be related to GFE and how it interacts with available apps.

Thoughts?.......

Justin thank you for the helpful suggestions, i think i am stuck with GFE and it's issues until we decide to either move to another email delivery system or GFE starts to get a bit better at keeping existing functionality when updating their software!

THanks agian.
