Allow Visual Studio Users On Workgroup Network Access To Web Projects

Greetings:

I have several Windows 10 Pro workstations using a workgroup (instead of a domain).

The permissions for IIS and the file system on the workstation running IIS for the inetpub directory are as follows:
Administration - full access
Specific user ids - full access

All Visual Studio users run Visual Studio with administrator privileges.

All Visual Studio solutions and projects are stored on the same workstation running IIS.

The firewall (G Data Total Security) contains rules for all IPs on the workgroup and all ports which may be used for websites. The direction is inbound and outbound.

A user on the workgroup (not where IIS is running) starts Visual Studio Pro 2016 and opens a solution containing class libraries and 1 or more web projects.  This user is unable to load the web project(s) and receives the following error message:

Error opening web http://tracy.local:8006. Unable to open the Web site 'http://tracy.local:8006'. The Web server 'http://tracy.local:8006' could not be found.

tracy.local is where IIS runs.

However, this user is able to open a web browser and enter http://tracy.local:8006/ to see the website on the IIS server.

What am I missing here?

Much thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice,
David Bach

computer1\admin is not the same as computer2\admin,

What you should be using is some type of version control i.e. visualstudio.com (free for up to 5 developers) or use GIT and check out/ check in your changes AND then publish to the production/test web server.

ASKER

Greetings David:

I use VSTS for source control.

What I see in between the lines is for the other developers not using the workstation IIS is on, they need to install IIS on their respective workstations and create the same website on their IIS instances. Subsequent to this, they will need to update their web project within Visual Studio to point to their IIS instead of the other workstation running IIS I spoke of.

When changes from 1 or more workstations needs to be tested by the team, their web project will publish to a pseudo production web server.

I hope this makes sense.

I look forward to your comment if I'm track or not.

Much thanks, David ...

if you are using VSTS then they should be opening from VSTS
Greetings David:

I'm new to VSTS but not to programming. Would you help me understand more about "... then they should be opening from VSTS" please.

Might you be aware of any publications which introduce VSTS for new VSTS users?

I look forward to your response.

Much thanks, David ...
