replication between sites - assurances

if you replicate data between your primary SAN to a DR SAN, what assurances and checks need to be performed to verify the health/reliability of the link between the sites and the replication process? What risks are there with such a setup, and what best practices/monitoring need to be in place to minimise those risks? what evidence could be requested to verify these risks are well managed with best practices?

Each SAN and replication has their own features to check the status of the link and the replication of the data.

It changes depending on the hardware, the link type/speed, the licence, etc. So you need to check this features before deciding for a particular SAN type/model.

Otherwise you will need to specify on the question the hardware that you have.

Best practices can be general, but the at the end the most useful ones are dependent on make/model.

Also important is to know if you are going to replicate on the HW level or SW, for example the replication features of IBM Storwize or EMC VNX are completely different from those of Veeam Backup & Replication, and similar products.

All this products have their own monitoring that you can use for alerts, or you can use your existing monitoring solution (netcool, nagios, op5, APM, zabbix...). Also depends if you have 24x7 operations, on-call personnel, or not.
