Google Wallet and Apple Pay: what do these programs do and how do they do it?

I am trying to understand from a high level, what Google Wallet and Apple Pay do and a high level view of how they do it.

I am not a security expert but eventually hope to understand the security each uses. But I am not ready for that kind of discussion.

Thanks.

Hi Newbieweb,

The two are different in that ApplePay is a secure way of paying for things online and at the brick & mortar stores that accept it, while Google Wallet is a way to send & receive money to friends and family (commercial accounts allow you to get paid for your services).

When you're ready to talk about the security side of it, just let me know. ;) Take care.

Ok, now that you described their differences from a 100K foot level, what unique security features enable them each to succeed in their own space?

Apple pay and google wallet are a NFC or Near Field Communication payment system. What's normally on your magnetic strip is your cc, with these services a unique transaction code is given to the merchant so they don't actually have your cc number. This is the short version.

Does this mean if I used Apple Pay, I would upload my CC numbers and not need to pull out the CC at stores/retailers which take Apple Pay?

Is NFC wireless? How does the unique code get to the merchant? Is my CC number encrypted in a secret Apple Pay code that only that retailer knows at that instant, so it can decrypt the real CC number? Please elaborate on that...
