How can I not screw up my perfectly working website?
Seriously... I have a site that I'd like to make a few changes to, however I don't want to mess it up (FUBAR)...
Is this what "clones" are for? What's the quickest pain free way to work on the site and make live with all my changes? It's a hosted site via cPanel.
Thanks

Have a backup and work on that.

Where do I work on the backup while leaving the production copy in tact?
Which one are you using - Wordpress.com / org ?

My site is profitnessshop.com...it is hosted. via cpanel
For my clients, I take a clone of their main site + setup it up on a dev site... so...
foo.com becomes dev.foo.com + when they're ready to deploy dev.foo.com I take care of switching the names + IPs etc.
If you take a clone of your main/production site as a dev site + only work on your dev site... if you destroy it, just restore your original backup + start again.

That sounds great David. I'm going to check that out shortly. Thanks!
Another perk of going this way is you can wrap all your dev sites in SSL certs.
https://LetsEncrypt.org provides free + high strength certs, so I wrap all production + dev sites in SSL.
In fact, at this point, all I have a mandatory rule that all sites I host are SSL wrapped. This includes only running SFTP, never FTP also.
I keep my entire infrastructure locked down with SSL, which dramatically reduces sites getting hacked by scraping clear text login info off lines.
