Get photo off message into camera roll

It is amazing this is not obvious.

I have a iPhone 6; someone sent me a message with an image attached. I want to get the image off & store where all the other images are so I can use it in a document.

I look on Google. First step is "Open the text conversation with the image in the Messages app.". I have NO CLUE what that means, there is no "text conversation".

Remember when Apple products were intuitive & easy to use? Those days are LONG gone.

How do I do the obvious task?

If you upgraded to IOS 11, you need to go to iCloud.com, log in and download you photos from there to your computer

You used to be able to turn on Auto Play, connect your phone and copy the camera roll to your computer but that vanished with IOS 11.

I cannot determine what version I have, when I try, it says Software Update, IOS 11.0.1.

It has Download and Install (grayed out), says This update requires a WiFi, which of course I have, so, AGAIN, Apple complexities make things difficult if not impossible.
You are on the newest version and now photos go to iCloud and that is where you have to get them.
How do I "go to iCloud"?

None of this stuff is self evident to me, glad it is to you.

I have no clue what my Apple ID is. They have been bugging me about that for maybe a year.

So I guess now I have to somehow overcome that & find out or guess at what that might be.

It is VERY hard for me to believe that the photo on that message went to the "iCloud". That implies that every text message sent to an iPhone in the world that has a photo, that photo is there. That has to be billions.

IOS 11 changed the settings and put photos and videos onto iCloud.

You need to use your email address with Apple and try Forgot Password. You will need your Apple ID.
John, I recognize the time is now that I have to deal with this.

This forces the issue.

Although I asked the sender of the text to please email me the photo to sidestep all this Apple nightmare.

Thanks
Please try to find your Apple ID because that is now where your photos are. Truly I wish you good luck here.
