Hi.

I am trying to hunt down some free online chat software. It has to run on Server 2008R2 or Windows 10, either under IIS or stand alone.  Just need users to be able to connect in on port 80 or 443 and start chatting. Not interesting in a hosted solution.

Anyone able to recommend something?

Hi,

If it is a production environment, it's not good to have a free version of messenger for server-client based. It's not recommended for security reasons. If it is for a testing purpose and you are keen to looking at a free version then try this https://sourceforge.net/projects/fim1/?source=navbar

Good luck

Security is unimportant here,  this will just be a social chat room. Does not matter of all the content is accessed, printed out on A3 and stapled to trees in the local park.

I was hoping for something that does not require a client software package, but will work from a plain browser. Preferably smartphone as well, if that is possible.

Why not just create a private IRC? It's super simple and would do everything you need it to do.

I am aware of IRC, however I seek a solution where non technical users, some without local admin access can just follow a link and chat, without having to download and install an IRC client.

@OP They actually wouldn't need to download anything at all. You could give them a mibbit link that takes them directly to your IRC.  Mibbit Is a web-based IRC client.
