Home Desktop Computer Purchase Advice

I am not sure that this is a proper question for this website, i.e. getting experts to recommend a particular product over another, but here goes.

I need to replace my 7 year old Dell XPS computer.  To that end, I have been doing some Internet research as to what to buy.
(Please bear in mind that the new computer  would primarily be used to access the Internet, view email, and balance a checkbook, no gaming.)  Initially I was going to buy another XPS but was disappointed to learn that the machine is getting poor performance and dependability reviews and the customer support for it is said to be horrible.  When I pointed out these reviews to a Dell sales representative, he suggested that I "move up" to one of their Alienware machines.  I told him that if the XPS machines are that bad, then perhaps I should check out another computer vendor. So I looked at the HP Pavillion, but found the same issues with it.  Both of these machines had recent reviews which stated that the purchaser ultimately had to return them and swore the would never buy another product from Dell or HP.

Given that 2 big name computer manufactures have issues with their desktops, I am at a loss as to what to buy.  What would  any of you experts out there buy if you needed to purchase a new home computer?

I have a Lenovo M73 Tower Computer with a desktop monitor and keyboard and it performs admirably well. No issues with it. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Something like this will do just fine for you.

Where did you purchase this machine?
Lenovo.com (Lenovo.ca in my case).  I customized to my needs, ordered it and had it shipped.

There is likely a newer model name now, but that is how I did it.
Thanks for the info and your quick responses, John.

Have you had to call their customer support line?  If so, how did that turn out?
I have two drives in this machine (both 1 TB). The secondary drive developed an error when the machine was new nearly two years ago. I called support, gave them the error code and got a new drive next day. I put it in and all has been well.

I have a spare X230 laptop ordered from Lenovo online (current machine is a Lenovo X1 laptop). The Bluetooth mouse failed pointing to the daughter card and Lenovo shipped me a new card in about 2 hours (I had onsite support for that machine).

My X1 Laptop is about a year old and it is fine. No failures.

I built my own custom PC.  I'll never buy another one from a vendor.  I've build a computer for my fiance' and am in the process of building one for my daughter.

I research each component and put together the best system I can with the best components I can find.
I only buy Lenovo commercial machines. Better engineered and less expensive over the long haul
I also custom build my personal machines. At least using standard components I can go to the nearest computer store and buy a replacement part if needed i..e Power Supply. No worries about proprietary connectors or proprietary layouts.

If one choses a budget line of computers, then you deserve exactly what you get.. If it lasts a few years you've got your money out of the machine. I plan for a 5-7 year replacement/upgrade and can re-use most components
I never use Budget consumer machines. Not worth it
I also use custom builds...just get a decent motherboard (probably the most important part) ...a good PSU...SSD+HDD and you are good to go...when i have to deal with a machine from the big vendors my first worry is ....will i  find spare parts....often people ask me for deals they get on 2nd hand workstations....some Dell/HP/Lenovo after some time get really cheap but...unless you buy at least a 2nd PSU for "just in case"  you can never rest assure  that you don't have to pay a small fortune for proprietary spare parts....
So usually i buy products in the middle range that have a lot of good critics i keep carefully all my warranties and if disaster strikes i get a replacement....usually if it isn't broken in the first 2 months it will last for quite some time...unless we are talking for HDDs but this is another story....
