Connnecting a pc to a monitor. PC has HDMI & Display port. Monitor has VGA and DVI. What do you do?

On a simple office desktop - not worried about high quality graphics / redraw refresh, etc...

The new dell optiplex 3050 has DisplayPort & HDMI connectors.

The monitor has VGA (the 15 pin 3 row blue connector) and DVI (the white connector).

Thoughts on which connector to use at each end?  I would think either at each end is fine for typing word docs, speadsheets,  the occassional funny video on youtube.

I guess it comes down to the ease / cost of the cable to convert from 1 end (DisplayPort or HDMI) to (VGA or DVI).

Thoughts?

You'll need to convert HDMI or DisplayPort to VGA, which will cost at least $20 for a decent quality converter.  But, by the time the signal goes through a converter, down a VGA cable and through the analog electronics of an older-style display, there will be significant pixel smear and blurring.

A better use of that money would be to put it toward  buying an inexpensive LCD display that supports at least HDMI.  They're available for well under $100 -- for refurbished units, in some cases under $50 delivered.
