Saving as gif, jpg, png, bmp - does it matter? Is one typically smaller than another with (not much) loss of quality

I get a daily dilbert cartoon in my inbox. I save some of them. Right click, save image.  I can choose png, gif, bmp, jpg and maybe some other formats.

Any thoughts on which to choose? At least for these types of web images.  Not for something like a 4K high res image.

I'd like to keep it small, but as clear as original / no loss of quality.

in fact, you can only SAVE an image received in an email in the format in which it was SENT.  to change the image format requires an image editor like GIMP, paint.net and so on.
Good point, Paul! I typically do the Save As (i.e., conversion) in IrfanView, but, as you mentioned, GIMP, paint.net, and lots of other products, like GraphicsMagick and ImageMagick, can do it. Regards, Joe

paul.... ok, when you save, a window pops up with the save location / name / type interface. I can pull down and save it as a.bmp or a.png or a.jpg, etc.

It's just adding that extension but stays in the xyz format!?!?!?!

Wait a second. let me see if they are different size at least.

no, they are different sizes just by my pulling down the type and choosing different file tyoes
bmp.bmp
png.png
jpg.jpg
gif.gif
I'm doing that save as picture in outlook 2016. I guess that does have that capability to save on the fly?
i stand corrected - i just tried this in a random email with an image and i DO get a choice of available formats!

i never noticed this before!

thanks
Interesting...obviously, it depends on the email client. I just tried it in Thunderbird and you do not get a choice...the Save As shows only the actual file type of the attached image.
Joe, i agree - but if the image is NOT an attached file, (i.e. from a website), then you will see the same choices as if you are on that site

all the same, i have never noticed that previously

No! The .bmp is a BMP, the .png is a PNG, the .jpg is a JPG, the .gif is a GIF. Sizes in bytes are:

gif.gif: 66,789
jpg.jpg: 39,465
png.png: 78,535
bmp.bmp: 313,254

As I mentioned in an earlier post, forget BMP. :)  Regards, Joe
You're welcome!
