Yes, I saw that and didn't understand if a regular desktop will supports this:

Supports NX and DEP
Supports CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, and PrefetchW
Supports Second Level Address Translation (EPT or NPT)

Agreed that there are differing opinions out there; each platform has pros and cons, each with it’s own camps.

Re performance with Hyper-V being type 1 and VMware type 2 hypervisor, it states:

“.. Type 1 hypervisor is also known as bare-metal implementation because they sit directly on the top of hardware, without needing any operating system. Since they can directly communicate with hardware resources, they are much faster than type 2 hypervisor.”
And VMware provided that 3 years before Microsoft.  Compare the Type 1 to Type 1.
I think the discussion was around VMware Workstation, type 2.  vSphere / type 1 would run $995, and it seemed that budget is a consideration considering the OP is talking desktop.
