Running a VM in windows 10 - can you point me to a tutorial?

I want to experiment with VMs but don't know where to start.  Some questions immediately come to mind:

I can do that on Windows 10, right?
What type of machine (processor, ram, hard drive) do you need for performance to be at least a walk, rather than crawling?
I've dabbled with VMs a while ago with win 7 I think it was.  There was a premade win XP VM you could download?  For win 10, do you have to start from scratch and make your own by running the win 10 install program on the VM?

And then to run a VM, install a program to see how it works then toss out that VM and start with that same original VM clean without any remainders of the test program you put on? without having to start from scratch and reinstall win 10 all over again in a vm?

any recommendations on a tutorial  / guide that gets you up to speed on the basics of making and managing VMs?

Thanks!

You can use VMware Workstation or Hyper-V (needs to be enabled in Windows 10 Windows Features).

You need a machine with a high end i5 or i7 CPU. You need 16 GB of memory (perhaps more). You need ample disk space (500 GB minimum). Preferably use an SSD drive.  You need Windows 10 Pro 64-bit as a host machine.

I have a ThinkPad X1 with Intel i7 CPU, 16 GB of memory, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, 1 TB NVM-e SSD drive. This is a fine host for virtualization.

You may be able to purchase pre-made machines, but I get a Windows License, ISO for installing the software and then install as a new machine and set it up. VMware or Hyper-V, File, New machine, look at the setup variables, make sure you provide 100 GB for the machine, check the other variables and let it run and start.

Once you work through the above, we can examine more details.
Here is a tutorial for Virtual Box. The steps for all of these are similar. I do not use Virtual Box.

Here's another for Virtualbox -dealt with installing the preview but still works fine
You really need to decide on your virtualization environment longer term but this will take you through the main points for free.
All the VMs work in much the same way
