AS400 IPL Types

Hello Team,

Could you please tell me the difference between IPL Type A and IPL Type B? IPL B is used for routine work like ...PTF , LICPGM installation , Post monthly backups and for free up some space .... so what is the purpose of IPL A ?

on what scenarios we use IPL Type C?

Regards
Avinash Chandra

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

"A" and "B" are two copies of system LIC (Licensed Internal Code).  A is unmodified, and B has PTFs applied.  A is a fallback copy of LIC in case a PTF applied to B side causes a critical problem, you can still IPL from the A copy of the LIC.

"C" is reserved for IBM service personnel.

"D" is alternate IPL from disk or tape.
