PDF printing issue

We've been sent some PDF files that we are having issues printing to both our HP Designjet T2300mfp
It's a CAD drawing saved as a PDF with all the layering info intact.
The pdfs are 7-8Mb

Adobe throws up an error saying this document cannot be printed
Foxit reader takes about 15 minutes and spits out part of the drawing - less than 20%
Users connect to hhe plotter which is shared on a Windows box.
We seem to have little issue with MS Project or CAD files - it's always PDF.
I've tried printing as bitmap, disabling spooling, changed spooling to straight away and last page, enabled processing on client, increasing IP timeouts.

Occasionally (1 in every 7) it will print correctly after a long long delay (15-20 mins)

I've asked for the sender to resend without all the layering info, but would migrating to a Postscript printer resolves this.

Thanks
