Look at this registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations and see if any entries present which preventing the installation? if so, delete the entries and try again.

Also, look at Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer.
Right-click the InProgress value and select Delete from the context menu (if exists, take backup of registry before deleting).

Post the full error message here.

How do i fix this ?

There are 2 possible solutions to fix this issue :

By adding the account (NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID) to log on as service using gpedit.msc 2)  implement the same solution using GPO.

1.Add account NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID as log on as service using GPEDIT.MSC on local server

Open gpedit.msc using administrator account ,Computer Configuration—>Windows Settings—>Security Settings—>Local Policies—>User Rights Assignment

Go to properties of Logon as Service, click on Add user or Group,Enter NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID ,click ok.

Restart the server and start installing WSUS role .

2) Implementing using GPO :

Go to your group policy management console, edit default domain policy

Computer Configuration—>Policies—>Windows Settings—>Security Settings—>Local Policies—>User Rights Assignment
To add the role, you have to reboot to allow the updates to complete the install. Once booted, you have to go and add the wsus role.
This time the role will be added after you complete the option settings, whether you want internal or SQL server to host the db and which option you want for the web/iis config default wsus web ports or you customize. Once complete, you would use the interface to configure your server options, classifications, products, synchronization schedule to retrieve update lists, automatic approval...
