Control D and Exit command differences

what is difference between control D and exit commands.

Ctrl-D signals EOT or End of transmission.

To know how it differs from EXIT, we need to know what program is interpreting the two commands.  I'm guessing a terminal window?

To the average user, they mean basically the same things in most programs that accept both.
