how can I preview many pdf files at the same time
I have many pdf files and want to preview like I can with image thumbnails windows file explorer
I dont want to open 12 pdf files in 1 instance adobe reader in 12 tabs and then have to rename files to descriptive names

What is your Windows OS and bit of the OS?
If you are running Windows 7 32 bit, you will be fine with Acrobat reader.

Preferences
General
In the Basic Tools section, tick the box shown in the screenshot below:
enable pdf thumbnail previews in window explorer
