how many domain controllers can exist in an HA DHCP cluster, Windows 2012 R2?

We have a couple of Windows 2012 R2 domain controllers and two 2016 domain controllers.  the two 2012 boxes are running DHCP in HA mode.  I'd like to add the DHCP role to the two 2016 boxes and bring them into the HA cluster.

Can you have more than two domain controllers in a DHCP HA cluster?

I am assuming that you set up DHCP Failover then in which case, you can only have two.

You should never put any DCs in a cluster. You can have many DHCP servers in a cluster though.

But if you used the DHCP failover functionality that was new in 2012, that isnt a cluster  DHCP Failover is two and only two servers. Domain controllers have nothing to do with it.

well, DHCP is running on my domain controllers.  Two of them are in HA mode with one another.  I was hoping to add a third, from a different site.

you're telling me I can't, is that correct?

ok, that's right.  we have two servers in the HA mode now so that's what I needed to know.
