Adjusting MTU


I understand the breakdown/composition of a frame

What isn't always clear in my mind is the resulting influence of an MTU value adjustment

If I reduce my MTU it is to avoid fragmentation, whichin turn will improve transmission speed
but if I reduce the MTU I am also reducing the quantity of data transmitted and consequently reducing the transmission speed ?

Reducing MTU reduces packet size,which can avoid the overhead of packets having to be resized enroute.  Imagine a ship too big to fit through the Panama Canal, so they unload it and put its cargo on two smaller ships.  Even if the big ship is only a little too big to fit, you're stuck making two shipments out of one.  You could have avoided the overhead of moving the cargo around by sending two smaller ships to begin with.

Conversely, if your path doesn't require you to resize your packets enroute, using the largest possible packet is to your benefit - you get the most data moved in the least amount of time.
