Unable to connect 6i forms/reports to hosted database oracle 12c

We have a hosted database (Oracle 12c) that I am trying to connect my old 6i forms/reports too. Please guide me as to what to ask our network manager based on the following trace file below: (Oddly enough, I have no problem connecting to the database using 32bit toad on Windows 10)

I'm not a Forms person so I cannot help specifically with that.  I've Googled and it appears that 6i to a 12c database is possible so I don;t think it is a version compatibility issue.

The first error in the trace that jumps out at me is the 12660.  That makes me think the database might want a secure network connection and the old 6i client isn't letting it happen.

Check the database server's sqlnet.ora file for any of the encryption settings.

Thanks, slightwv. I will ask if I can view the sqlnet.ora file on the server side and will post any updates on here. And yes, there shouldn't be any issues because it worked in my previous job with Oracle database 12c installed.

Yes, it is possible to connect Forms6i to an Oracle12 database.  We have that combination working.  But, you do need some non-default settings in Oracle12:
1.  The database characterset must be: AL16UTF16, not: AL16UTF32, which is the default for Oracle12.
2. Another setting must be changed somewhere too, but I can't find that right now.  That controls which Oracle client versions can be accepted.  By default, the Oracle12 database (or listener?) will not accept requests from an Oracle8 client, which Forms6i uses.

Hi Mark, thanks for the reply. Do you mean changes need to be made on the server side? Unfortunately, I won't have access then. Also, the sqlnet ora on the server side has WALLET_LOCATION and SQLNET.WALLET_OVERRIDE parameter set to true, SSL_CLIENT_AUTHENTICATION to false. But is there any way to "hack" the client so it can connect to the hosted db? Someone mentioned rewriting the JAR, but I forgot what exactly was mentioned.

"hack" is a bad word here.  I'm not 100% sure what the parameters you posted do other than what the documentation says they do.  I've not used the SSL or OVERRIDE ones so I'm not sure exactly what they control.

Anyway, if the database server is set up to use encryption, then the client needs to have the same ability.  Figuring out a way around that sort of defeats the purpose.  Were there no encryption specific settings in the sqlnet.ora file?

That is what the first error I found points to.

When you see an Oracle error that is 5 numbers, add an ORA- to the front of it when you go looking.  So, look at what is on the web for ORA-12660.

Yes, the setting for: SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER is the other setting that I was thinking of last week.  That must be like this:
SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER=8
And, that must be in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory of the database, not of the of the Oracle listener (if they are different, and in Oracle12 systems, these are often different).

Obviously, the database characterset is something that is set on the server, not on the client.  So, if you don't have access to (or control over) the database server, I would say that you aren't going to get OracleForms6i working directly with an Oracle12 server that has default settings for Oracle12.

Here is a possible work-around to consider: set up your own local Oracle12 database that you can control the settings in, that uses a database link to connect to the Oracle12 database you want to connect to, and create a view in this local database for each table (or view) that you want OracleForms6i to be able to connect to.  Obviously the performance of a system like this will be slower than a direct connection to the target database.

Also, tried using another tnsname ora file, and I didn't get the encryption error but a different error: unable to connect to destination. And looking at the trc file it is a 12533 error illegal ADDRESS parameters. But it's the same tnsname ora file used for Toad that was able to connect.  So, I really don't know what's going on....

If you look around for that error it points to a syntax issue in the tnsnames.ora file.

Toad might be better at parsing files with slight syntax issues than the Oracle products.  Oracle is pretty picky when it comes to the format of the tnsnames.ora file.  This is why they developed tools that specifically maintain simple text files.

For example:  The only thing that can be in column 1 is a comment or the start of an entry.

Thanks guys. I honestly didn't have time to try the database link, but I did install the database and ran into the exact same error. I did not have any encryption set up or anything. But adding this SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER=8 did solve it. Thanks everyone!
