MS CRM 4.0 - Duplicate detection suddenly rules stopped working

I have an elderly, complex but normally very stable MS CRM 4.0 solution - a few days back duplicate detection rules stopped working. Any ideas what I could look for as potential cause/resolution?

I have done the following so far (not in this order):
  • unpublish/publish rule
  • restart CRM async service
  • recycle app pool
  • iisreset
  • reboot server

Obvious questions:
Is Duplicate detection switched on?
Do rules show published?

Slightly less obvious:
Any relevant errors in the Windows event log?

How have you determined that duplicate detection isn't working?  Is it that the duplicate window no longer opens?

I do not know how to disable the duplicate detection rules - but nothing has been changed since it was working and the rules (the active ones) are showing as published.

I have not found anything likely in the event log.

The dialog warning about duplicates does no longer show and therefore do not prevent creating duplicate accounts (having the same VAT ID)
The "global" switch for duplicate detection is at Settings  Data Management | Duplicate Detection Settings

Thank you - all checkboxes are checked in my solution - Danish, so different text but all are enabled...
Well it sounds like you have done all the right things.  This might be one where you have to contact Microsoft, but I think that support might have ended for CRM 4.0.

I don't have any other ideas - sorry.
I know it is a grand old baby, but it is running nicely otherwise and yes - support for that version has ended - I thought maybe a server patch was the culprit, but there does not seem to be any patching matching this problem...
I suppose you could try enabling server tracing and see if anything shows in the trace logs when a duplicate should be flagged up.
For CRM (the verbose thingy)? That must be off office hours I think - as it is a bit heavy on the server
