Hi Dave,
AutoHotkey will do it. This EE article will get you going on it:
AutoHotkey - Getting Started

It's very easy to use, but if you have any problems, post them here and I'll try to help. Regards, Joe

Hi David,

AutoIt can do what you want, but I do not believe it is Open Source so does not meet your requirements in that respect.

I believe it is gratis, but not libre.

Just mentioning in case you want more alternatives.

this is nice and all ... i've followed the link @joe winograd, but i don't need any of these scripting or coding features ... all i need is to be able to program a key to output a string of text

Maybe Mini Mouse Macro a great free mouse and keyboard recording macro ... can actively record your mouse movements, clicks and keys.

Another great feature of Mini Mouse Macro is the ability to save your macro's and load up whatever macro you need when you need it.

So use it just for that and ignore everything else...very easy. Here's an example of sending a string of text with the F12 key:

F12::Send This is a long string of text that will be sent when you hit F12.

That's it!
