You put your question in the Q&A section, this is more of a training item. SEO is a constantly shifting target of which there are some general rules that don't shift i.e. creating a sitemap.xml file and robots.txt. Once people have used tricks i.e. the old rule of having links to and from your site on other sites.  Which works until the search engine decides that you are simply a link farm and now starts punishing you for trying to game the system.

SEO optimisation also varies depending upon your platform, i.e. Sharepoint, Wordpress, Magento, and others.

What David is referring to is there is another portion of the site called Gigs over at https://www.experts-exchange.com/gigs/ where you can put in a request to hire somebody.

I think if we can refine what you want to get out of learning SEO, we may be able to help you here.  I feel when people say they want to learn SEO, that can mean multiple things to different people. At the core, it really means optimizing the code on your website for the automated spiders/bots that crawl your site and collect the information that gets stored in their remote server and then later analyzed for ranking based on different types of searches.

The other meaning is more generic for just getting more of the right people to your site. And that is more involved.

For the first part, it is just a matter of using good html coding practices. Some common bad practices are to use tags in the wrong manner such as using heading tags (h1,h2 and h3) to change the size of text in stead of using styles.  Heading tags of course should be used just as if you are writing a term paper. You have a main topic sentence (the h1 tag) and sub topic sentences ( h2 ) with supporting paragraphs (p tags). This part you can easily learn on your own by reading up on sites like;

An easier option is to use a CMS like Wordpress for your site where all of this is already in place and all you need to add is the most important part, your content.
Other CMS's include;
https://wordpress.org
https://wordpress.com
https://www.joomla.org
https://www.drupal.org
https://www.wix.com
https://www.weebly.com
https://www.squarespace.com

The last 3 starting with wix are all in one systems (hosting and templates) and may be the easiest to use. The others offer more options but can have a longer learning curve. All will be easier than coding your own.

From there you can check to make sure your site is well coded using an html validator, https://validator.w3.org.

All that technical part is well and good. But having a well coded site is only a very small part of what you are really asking, getting visitors to your site. The most important part of the equation is content. Having unique content that people are looking for, will use and will share without being prompted is what will get visitors.

The content part takes multiple disciplines including;
  • Planning
  • Research
  • Copy writing
  • Public relations
  • Marketing - Advertising, Acquisition, Retention, CRM
  • Data mining / analtyics
  • Passion for your product

Given the options, use a CMS for your site and then hire somebody that can help coach you on the above. This type of coaching is going to be long term where you may need more help in the first few months and then at intervals over at least a year.  The more hands on you become, the faster you will pick it up and learn trends. The learning part never stops as things change rapidly. What you learned in year 1 may not apply to year 2 or 3.

To answer your question more specifically, "What would be the cost of teaching me how to do basic SEO".  The first part you may be able to do on your own for free or a very low cost. There are also online course including here on EE https://www.experts-exchange.com/courses/.

For the content and marketing portion, it is going to depend on the amount of sweat equity you want to put in and what it is worth to you to bring in new users.  You can spend very little in the $500 to $1,000 range to get you started with a good coach that may spend 10 hours with you.  If you have a serious product you want to launch, you can expect to spend in the lower 5 figures or more over the course of a year.

Knowing your product and goals will help set more exact expectations.

Good luck!

Scott
