"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

As quoted on the Dell website "Dramatically boost application performance with the latest Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 or E5-2600v2 product family and up to 24 dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs)."

I'm 99% sure it won't take the cheaper E5 processor. Professional server system like Dell or HP are usually VERY meticulous about their specs. Meaning, if a lower CPU was compatible, they would definitely put it in their official documents (as to provide customers with a wider range of choice).

Nope: Dell R720 Data Sheet PDF. E5-2600 v1 and in later iterations v1/v2.
