Buy Chromecast or Miracast to connect to your TV and stream the content from your smartphone.
Ditto, I have chromecast connected via hdmi and it works well.

Link for Chromecast info.

Post back the model no of your TV.

Need to check the spec of your TV first.

"whatever playing in phone app" I assume you only want to play photos and videos and not to do screen mirroring.

Yes certainly, you need a device or media that received the information from your phone to put it into the TV.
There is a chromecast as jackie says. But I'd recommend you to get the Nvidia shield :) It's expensive but you can manage everything from there and even come with google assistant.

I used it extensively for google movies, Netflix, Spotify, google music, amazon prime, youtube, ted, etc. (supports 4K natively).
I got the version 2014 and it works just great, and I used it as well to stream my video games into the big TV :) hahaha
And maybe in black Friday should get any discount on amazon hahaha :)
And keeping this in mind:

It works just fine and I highly recommend it

A device is not a MUST and it is the reason I ask you about model no of your TV. There are paid app to do the streaming for specific models of major brands of smart TV which in Internet enabled either via WiFi or network cable.

Uhmm good to know, I got the shield since 2014 and at that time it was a must.
