Exchange 2016 DAG

Hi Guys

In Exchange 2016,  if we installed all three Roles ( HUB,CAS & Mailbox roles ) in two servers. can  we create a DAG & add these two server as member rather then creating a separate two server for HUB & CAS and another two  separate server for Mailbox role.

Thanks inadvance

Hi Pankaj,
In Exchange 2016 there is only one role i.e.Mailbox role.  Optional role Edge is available in Exchange2016 which is typically deployed in your perimeter network, outside your internal Active Directory forest, and is designed to minimize the attack surface of your Exchange deployment.
If you install 2 Exchange servers with mailbox role you can create DAG and configure HA for databases.

For HA for your client access you need a load balancer which is not free or you can confgure DNS RoundRobin.
DNS RoundRobin is supported in Exchange 2016.  Note: It is not an automatic failover system.

The free solution is to DNS load balancing. You only need to setup multiple A record for Exchange servers, e.g.
mail.commonname.com A 192.168.1.100    IP of first server
mail.commonname.com A 192.168.1.101   IP of second server

This perfectly works for atleast Outlook and OWA on Windows machine.

Exchange 2016 have only two roles.

1- Mailbox
2- Edge

Edge, works as a perimeter to protect you mailbox from hacking. Now you have been working with exchange version 2010 and 2013. I have to tell you the methodology is the same, nothing has change.

Another approach is to deploy a virtual load balancer from Kemp, it has a free version.
