Network gear w/o support

Looks like the re-seller sold us network gear (routers, firewalls, switches, controllers) without any manufacture or 3rd party support.  Probably cost effective that way.  Now they getting me a support quote.  Tricky?

Questions.  Can they do it normally?  And does it mean I wont have any support even day 1 after installation?

This is in US and licensed large certified reseller.  Network gear, Cisco/PAN.

Hi,

You have to be careful and wise at the moment of buying appliances.
Before acquiring network gears and whatnot, you need to create a list of question that you are going to ask before proceeding with the talking.

Some of re-seller do this type of things on-purpose to make you sign a contract with them. Buying from a third party doesn't necessarily means they will give you the support, the support you have to buy it aside of the equipment.

Thanks Hemil.  So without the smartnet or a 3rd party. There's no manufacture support at all?

Hi,

Yes, that is correct based on my experience. Now, it may be the case that there is something out there, but you will have to do some research.

Sonicwall is awful that way.  I bought a sonicwall device a couple years back, plugged it in, tried to get it working, couldn't.  Called sonicwall, they wouldn't talk to me until I paid them for support contract.  Once I did, the support rep said it was a bug in the firmware and there was NO WAY I could have gotten it working without support.  I complained, got a refund, switched to Untangle for EVERYTHING.  But the point is, buyer beware.  Read what you're getting and ask questions.

That is very odd that they would turn around and try to sell you support AFTER selling the equipment... sounds like it's their way of hooking people in. Assuming that you bought your stuff new, I would research the warranty that came with what you bought. Always check the warranty/support before buying equipment. At least that enables you to make an informed decision. If you buy a product without a support contract of any sort, then you're unsupported until you sort it out, unless there is a warranty that comes with the device (which depending on the maker, only covers defects not support in setting things up).

The cisco gear will have a manufacturer's warranty to it.  Depending on the actual device, this will be anywhere from 30-90 days.

To confirm coverage and type, pull together a list of serial numbers and email that to tac@cisco.com, be sure to include your CCO if you have one. They will forward that to the Entitlements team who will review the numbers one by one and send you notes on what coverage is applicable, etc.
