Samsung EVO 850 SSD drive specs vs Intel 545S Series

First on the Samsung side..... someone said the EVO 850 is MLC. For some reason Samsung doesn't really say if they are TLC or MLC. Even if you hit their web site it doesn't say. I find that really odd. Does anyone know for sure?

Second... from what I can tell the EVO 850 is 32-layer and the Intel is 64. So... in layman's terms  is the 64-layer something really impressive?

Which is better?  Both articles have specifications  (I'll let you read the links, compare the read and writes).  Both are probably fine for standard computing purposes -- by the time they wear out the new improved-fresh-with-new-technology SSDs will be with us.

I am going to agree that I think it is a TLC drive but why isn't it specified somewhere at Samsung?

   That was an interesting article by anandtech but I didn't really see where they stated what 64-layer brought to the party.....

They both use the  SATA interface and TLC NAND flash. These days SATA is the main limiting factor.  Using any of the PCI-E i.e. some but not all m2. drives, and nvme drives are faster.  SATA drives also clog up when the disk queues get >16
 

Samsung doesn't mass-produce V-NAND and then sort the results into MLC and TLC bins; the chips in the 850 EVO were born to host three bits per cell

Nothing really.  Just a new way of manufacturing.

Lots of hype about it being 64 layer but there doesn't seem to be anything extra in the performance.

I am going to have to agree with you @dbrunton. I got in to a chat with Intel Support:

Me: The 545S series SSDs are 64-layer. What does 64-layer bring to the party?
Alek: Answering your question, this is most likely to be the way the memory is arranged bring more reliability.

Alek: What I meant is that it is related to the memory and the way it is arranged to provide more reliability.

They probably are the most important CPU producer out there still.  Not the biggest, that's ARM's CPUs.  Their rivals are catching up but are probably two generations away in capability.

Their other products aren't industry leaders.  Their SSDs are just the same as everybody else's and Samsung seems to be the leader there.  In the server market they will be attacked by AMD's EPYC chips and there are a bunch of ARM servers coming up.  So could be interesting times for Intel.

They've taken some missteps.  Tried to compete with ARM chips in phones and tablets.  Price was too high and battery life too low.

A little like IBM.  The glory days are gone but they're still a player in the computing market.
