How to have SQL2016 (or SQL2008) installed in Windows 7 with SQL2005 database already installed

The computer is Windows 7 Pro with SQL2005 database & studio installed.  We would like to install SQL2016 in order to access other SQL instances within the network that are versions 2008/2014/2016, but we  don't want to uninstall SQL2005 from the computer.  How can we do this? (if possible)

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes it is possible. I have 2008 r2/2012/2014/2016/2017 ctp on my laptop.

You can install named instances of 2014 and 2016.
rayluvsAuthor Commented:
Yeah, but it's requesting to uninstall SQL2005.
Pawan KumarDatabase ExpertCommented:
As per MS it should work -

The following table shows side-by-side support for SQL Server 2016 with previous versions:
Existing instance of SQL Server 2016	Side-by-side support for previous versions
SQL Server 2016 x64	SQL Server 2005 (32-bit)

SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) x64

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

When the installation starts, you need to choose "new instance/install" rather than upgrading an existing instance. Doing so would do what is called a "side-by-side" installation. If SQL 2005 is installed as the local instance, your SQL 2016 instance would be a  named instance.

I guess it is asking you to uninstall is because the compatibility level for SQL 2005 (90) is not supported in SQL 2016 and hence may be unable to upgrade.

That being said, if your goal is only to "access other SQL instances within the network that are versions 2008/2014/2016", why not install SSMS alone?
- SSMS is the management studio, it's free and should be able to  connect to all the 3 versions mentioned in your question.
- The SQL Server database engine itself on the other hand is licensed. If you don't need to host any databases on your computer, please  evaluate installing only SSMS.
Pawan KumarDatabase ExpertCommented:
>>why not install SSMS alone?
How installing SSMS alone will connect to other versions as the other versions are still not installed.
Nakul VachhrajaniTechnical Architect, Capgemini IndiaCommented:
@Pawan: They would like to connect to other versions on the network.
Pawan KumarDatabase ExpertCommented:
@Author - Do you want just SSMS ( Management Studio ) or to install entire SQL Server 2016 on the server that has SQL Server 2005. ?
rayluvsAuthor Commented:

The computer I am trying to install is in a Windows 7 Pro.

That's a great idea, install just the SSMS is the management studio (I'll check if the process is not a upgrade and make sure it's a new instance install)

How do I install "just" SSMS?

Glad to know my suggestion of using SSMS was useful. Any reason this was not considered in the rating?
rayluvsAuthor Commented:
All recommended SSMS, but it  didn't work when trying to install the version desires, sql2016 (if it would have worked, would have awarded all accordingly).  Since Pawan followup on my failed install question by recommending to "lower" the version, and it worked, awarded him.
Nakul VachhrajaniTechnical Architect, Capgemini IndiaCommented:
The discussion moved to SSMS after my comment. Agree that the suggestion of using a lower version worked, but that was after the discussion moved to the correct path.

I am okay with a split, but feel that the comment which corrected the course of the discussion does deserve some credit.
rayluvsAuthor Commented:
Sure, how do I go about it?
rayluvsAuthor Commented:
Thanx! Will proceed!
