I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There is no free update to win 10 now.

Even if you can do some tricks to do the update, the problems are likely to stay.

It is likely that you will have problems in Windows XP.

My advise is that you need to do a factory recovery.

What is the brand and model of your notebook?

Check in all programs and see whether you can find the software to do a factory restore.

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free, until the 31st of december 2017, if you are using assistive technologies.

You can do a Windows 8 Reset. This keeps all your data, drivers and basic Windows 8 apps. This basically reinstalls Windows 8 and you should be able to make it work correctly and update properly.

Then restore your applications.

You can upgrade to Windows 10, but you need to pay for the license.

You have to license via Microsoft so that you get a valid server license

If you have a disability, you can (apparently) still get Windows 10 for free for another 11 days.

XP is dead - don't go back there.  Get Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store as posted above.

Not sure when Microsoft will close the gate.
