Software Inventory

Hi all,

We're wanting to build a comprehensive inventory and software catalogue.

We currently use Snipe-It to log purchases and check out software to assets, but we want to start recording free software and a bit more detail with it. So a version history, support expiry date, details of the license. The aim is to be able to help us better manage our software in terms of making sure it is kept up to date and patched across our entire network. It would be good if we can search for a PC and see all the software on it, or search a software name and see all the machines it's on.

Basically it's more than an Excel job. So does anyone have any experience with inventory software or database applications that might be suitable for this? We're looking at methods for auditing as well so welcome any suggestions!

Cheers,

Andy

Have you looked at Belarc Advisor Corporate for getting an inventory of software on computers?

Hi,

Looks good thanks, we'll look into it more. I should have said at the beginning as well we are a charity so we're looking for the free-est option as well! We might be able to afford a small expenditure if the tool is right for the job, but I think it would be a bit of a hard sell to the top brass if we were looking at a lot. We have about 600 clients to manage.

Take a look at Spiceworks:
https://www.spiceworks.com/free-pc-network-inventory-software/

We had a similar need a while back and really never found anything that would meet our needs.  We never found something that would accurately locate enough.

For example:  Many programs don't have an install:  Just unzip and run.  Some don't mess with the registry so they cannot be easily located.  What about plug-ins in the apps themselves?
Thanks, thats a good call. We are expecting we probably wont get a 100% fit for free but if we can get something that helps significantly then it's worth a go.
This is a similar request to one we had a while back.  We ended up usiing WinAudit for windows based machines and Etrechek for MAC based machines.  It was not a perfect solution, but it worked.  KACE is on the expensive side, and it's audits are not as good.
