Veeam Agent for MS Windows 2.0.0700 - Free Edition & Windows 10 Backup failures

I have about 15 Windows 10 Workstations running Veeam buckups nightly.  Initially all backups ran without issue, and now more than half are failing.

Below you will view errors on one workstation when trying to run a manual backup.  I have noticed the directory "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Endpoint Backup\metadata\VSS\WritersData\" seems to continually have permissions issues.  There always seems to have permissions problems with a subfolder within the \writersdata folder.  I right click on this folder, and try unchecking Read-Only, and Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files, and it always errors (Error applying attribute) on one or more subfolders.  When I try and open the subfolder I get Location is not available - Access is Denied.  If I try and change the permissions it states "Unable to display current owner", and changing owners does not work either.

This seems highly suspicious, Windows Update has not broken something, when were the last Windows 10 updates applied ?

cmp119IT ManagerAuthor Commented:
All patches and updates include Windows 10 Fall Creators updates are applied.  All third party applications (adobe, java, etc.) are all also fully patched.

Yes, what I meant was a Windows Update has not broken your machines, unless you can be certain this same updates have been applied to all machines.

I still do not get what you're saying or implying.  Are you saying an update has caused the issue?  If so, which update, then?  All our machines have pretty much the same thing installed across the board. Some system backup while other don't.  Sometimes a computer fails to backup and then works, and then fails again.  Should I simply remove Veeam and reinstall it from scratch as an alternative?

Okay, so if you are certain that Windows Updates are the same across your estate it's not Windows Updates.

ah, so Veeam Backup is intermittent, on some of your Windows 10 machines, it's not failed completely?

You could try a re-install, although interestingly there are reports in the Veeam forum, of issues with VSS in Windows 10 Creator edition, and Veeam has asked individuals to report errors to their Service Desk.

I contacted Veeam Support as suggested, and they indicated resetting the backup to a volume backup, save the change, and then change it back to "Backup Entire System".  That worked for all 15 systems, only two systems worked once and went back to a failed state.

I think Veeam have got a software fault!

I just checked and now some workstations are failing again.  It appears it backs up successfully one time and failes afterwards.  So I think this issue is more with Veeam and WinX and 1709 update and need to come out with a patch or something.
